An interactive work by Ambartsum Amayakyan: the image is set in stripes that live and shimmer right in the browser. Stripe frequency, thickness, phase and speed adjust on the fly, and you can swap the author’s portrait for your own photo or video.
The work is about the gap between how we see ourselves and how others picture us. The same person becomes different, distorted versions in different people’s heads, and the distortion is the point. That is why you can upload your own photo and see yourself through someone else’s eyes.
And the theme switch that doesn’t switch the theme is a joke about the same thing: we are creatures of habit and often think we want a choice, when in fact there isn’t one, only black and white.
